This weekend of writing, prayer and reflection will focus on the practice of “contemplative writing,” using the techniques of creative and reflective writing as openings into the life of prayer in our daily lives. Through examples and writing prompts, we will explore the experience of praying part of a day, praying in a place, writing about people or things important to us, and praying with poetry. The basic tools for the weekend will be a journal and something to write with. There will be stretches of free time for writing, walking and reflecting, and sharing will be optional but invited.
Kathy has worked as a teacher, poet and spiritual director at Virginia Theological Seminary and Wesley Theological Seminary, with classes focusing on writing, literature, spirituality and explorations of vocation. She offers retreats and workshops at many area churches and retreat centers, including the annual Evelyn Underhill Day of Quiet offered in Washington each year in June, as well as courses and retreats on writing and poetry as spiritual practices. A finalist in the 2020 Paraclete Poetry contest, she is the author of four books of poems, most recently Viriditas: New and Selected Poems. She has also published on approaches to vocation for laity in Shaping a Faithful Life: Discernment and Discipleship, and her scholarly work over the years has focused on the British Catholic artist and poet David Jones. Kathy is a Companion in the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross (SCHC) and co-directs the Adelynrood School for Spiritual Direction. Her website is at kathleenstaudtpoet.org.
