Mens Retreat: Biblical Brothers
June 9 @ 4:00 pm - June 11 @ 2:00 pm
The book of Genesis is filled with tales of intrigue, promise, failings, and hope, all having to do with
the beginning of the divine/human adventure.
The players in these stories are God, of course, and a rich company of characters invited by their would-be divine companion into relationship— a relationship that always seems to require more from them than they can manage or even imagine. Among the cast are dozens of men whose spiritual work consists mainly in learning how to be faithful fathers, sons, and brothers. Many of these stories call to mind the difficulty of being faithful while competing for what appear to be limited blessings: Cain and Abel; Noah’s sons carefully covering their drunken father; Abraham and his sons, Isaac and Ishmael; Jacob and Esau; and Jacob’s sons selling their brother into slavery. In the ever-living nature of scripture, we often discover that their stories are not so different from our own.
We will spend some time with our biblical brothers at the men’s retreat the weekend of June 9-11. Come rock on a porch, wander in the woods, or sit by a lake. Come listen to stories, including your own, as we gather to reconnect with the rich tradition that still helps us navigate the divine/human adventure.
John Baker is a priest in the Diocese of Virginia who has led pilgrimages, workshops, and retreats throughout his ministry. He looks forward to gathering with those who come to learn and laugh and enjoy the rich stories of fathers, sons, and brothers at this new Shrine Mont offering.
